1. 실험원리 / 이론적배경
- Glass, which is mainly made of silica(SiO2), is not a complete crystalline solid and has ill-defined melting temperature. Glass has a very low reactivity. Also, it will soften with heating and you can easily change the shape. By cooling the glass, it will be stiff back. So it is used a lot in creating equipment for experiment.
- Glass possesses a wide range of properties depending on their compositions, in the chemical laboratory soda-lime glass and borosilicate glass are mainly used a lot.
- Soda-lime glass is made by mixing soda(Na2CO3), lime(CaCO3) and silica(SiO2). It becomes soften and at 300 to 400 °C. However, soda-lime glass products are weak with repeated heating and cooling due to the high thermal expansion coefficient.
- On the other hand, borosilicate glass, produced with the trade name Pyrex or Kimax, is difficult to process because of high melting temperature of 700 to 800 °C. However, borosilicate glass products are strong with heating due to the low thermal expansion coefficient.
- In the laboratory, a lot of glass tubes are made of soda-lime glass. When a glass tube is heated with the gas burner, it becomes soften and can be bent and pulled. Therefore, it can be readily processed.
- The glass tube may cause burns if not handled with care because it does not seemingly have any change when it is heated at a very hot temperature.

4. 실험방법
Experimental Procedures
Exp A. Cutting Glass Tube (twice)
① Place a glass tube on the flat surface and create a single, sharp scratch on the glass wall with a triangle file
② Turn the scratch away from your body and place your thumbs on the glass tube.
③ Push your thumbs away from you.
④ Polish the glass tube ends by rotating them in the flame.
Exp B. Bending Glass Tube (twice)
① Put the glass tube into the flame of the gas torch and heat it by rotating the tube until it is pliable and smooth.
(Heat it until the upper part of the flame turns yellowish.)
② Remove the tube from the flame and bend the tube for the desired shape and hold it until it becomes hard.
Exp C. Pulling Glass Tube (twice)
① Slowly roll a glass tubing in the flame until it softens.
② When heated enough, pull out the glass tube from the flame and stretch it out by pulling it to both sides.
① Wait until the glass tube cools and hardens.
② Cut it in an appropriate length.
③ Polish the sharp tips in the flame.

· Please make sure to wear cotton gloves during the experiment.
· There are many pieces of glass around you, so please clean up the surroundings.
· Put the glass in a glass waste box and be careful of burns and sharp glass.
· If you get hurt, you'll lose 10 points. I hope you experiment carefully.
